A new incursion in this audiotheque by Beans, Bacon & Gravy, the band whose trentennial mission is to make North-American old time music known in Italy.
On February 6th, 2008, we went to Crema, Lombardy, on invitation by the tireless Paolo Gualandris. Paolo is the organiser of the Crema Caffè letterario nights. That year, the literary cafè was hosted in a night club, a strange place filled with framed pictures of Hollywood stars, as well as a plethora of old kitsch objects. BB&G accompanied the event with their music, playing before, during and after our talk, in a setting that reminded us of a David Lynch movie (we expected him to show up at any moment).
All the attendants and the local press agree that it was a powerful soirèe.
Among the old tunes they performed, BB&G included a Seneca traditional song. As they sang it, we all slipped in a good state of mind, as if we were in Six Nations territory. As often happens, we owe the knowledge of this song to Pete Seeger, the incorruptible folk transmitter. We quote from the liner notes of his album Circles & Season (1979):

Ray Fadden, who runs the extraordinary Six Nation Museum in Onchiata, NY, taught me this. I asked him to teach me an Indian song; he replied: 'Pete, many of our songs are sacred to us and should be not sung by white men. But it would be good if you learned this canoe song and taught it to others'.

And here's what BB&G added that night: 'In our small and humble way, we're carrying the baton Pete was handed.'
